What Is a 2:3 Ratio? Print Sizes That Fit It
2:3 explained in plain terms: which print sizes share the ratio (4x6 to 24x36), the pixel math at 300 DPI, and how to crop any image to it.
2:3 means the short edge is two-thirds the long edge. Multiply any 2:3 size by the same number and you get another 2:3 size: 4x6 doubled is 8x12, tripled is 12x18, six-fold is 24x36. That's why a single well-prepared file can serve a tiny gift print and a giant poster.

Quick self-check for any dimensions: short ÷ long = 0.6667 means 2:3. (8÷12 = 0.667 ✓. 8÷10 = 0.8 ✗ — that's 4:5, a noticeably squarer shape. The difference between the two trips up more printable sellers than anything else; see 3:4 vs 4:5 compared.)
Worked example: is your image ready for 24x36?
You have a digital painting at 5000x7500 px — that's exactly 2:3 (5000÷7500 = 0.667), so no crop needed.
- At 24x36: 5000 ÷ 24 = 208 DPI. Below the 300 gold standard but above 150 — a poster viewed from a couch will look fine; a print inspected at reading distance won't be tack-sharp.
- At 16x24: 5000 ÷ 16 = 312 DPI. Fully crisp.
- Honest listing line: "Prints crisply up to 16x24; suitable up to 24x36."
If your image isn't 2:3 — most camera phone photos are 3:4, most Canva canvases are whatever you typed — you must crop, never stretch.
