Tote Bag Print Size: Front Panel Dimensions

The tote catches people out by being square. Most artwork is portrait or landscape, so dropping it straight in leaves an awkward band of empty canvas at the top or the sides, and the print ends up sitting too low once the bag is carried.

Placement that survives the real product

• The panel is square at 9.5 x 9.5 in. A portrait design should be sized to the height and centred; a landscape design to the width.
• Bias the design upward. A print centred in the true square sits low when the bag hangs from a shoulder — shifting up by roughly 5–8% of the panel height reads correctly on the body.
• Canvas texture eats fine detail. Hairlines under about 1.5 pt and small reversed type lose definition on natural cotton.

The rule that overrides every chart: print areas are the maximum, not the target. Filling the entire area is almost never the best-looking choice — most strong designs use 70–85% of the available width and sit slightly above the geometric centre, because that is where the eye expects them on a worn or photographed product.
